About

This mini exhibition looks at the animal skulls and other bones excavated on the site and considers what they reveal about life in the Roman fort.

A quarter of a tonne of animal bones - enough to fill 470 boxes in our stores - has been excavated from the fort over the years. It takes up a lot of space but the bones can tell us much about what the people ate, how they lived and what the local environment was like, from shoulders of beef hung up to be smoked to frog bones from the ditches.
